Excerpts of a Conversation Over Passion Pit’s “Kindred” During a Drive from Orlando to Tallahassee

NOTE: The transcript will represent my quotes in normal script, and my traveling companion’s in Italics.

Track 1: “Lifted Up (1985)”

“This is so fun! It’s bouncy. This is the pop album that Taylor Swift wanted to make.”

Track 2: “Whole Life Story”

“Passion Pit is always a safe bet to have on in the car with girls. I’ve pulled that out a few times.”

Track 3: “Where the Sky Hangs”

“Ahhh it’s so fun! I love it!”

Track 6: “Dancing on the Grave”

“This album is pretty slow.”

“Yeah, it started off good but then slid into a gloss.”

“An album is more than 3 or 4 songs. This just doesn’t have them.”

Track 7: “Until We Can’t (Let’s Go)”

“This one’s good.”

“I do like this one.”

Track 8: “Looks Like Rain”

“I have to be honest…honestly, the problem is that their last two [albums] were so good that they’re bound to have a flop.”

“You think this is a flop?”

“No; just, you know, not as good.”

Track 9: “My Brother Taught Me How to Swim”

“This one’s good.”

“Yeah I was just going to say it’s pretty good.”

“It has to be the last one.”

“No, second to last.”

“True.”

Track 10: “Ten Feet Tall (II)”

WOAH.”

“…This is interesting.”

“It sounds like a YouTube video.”

Final Thoughts:

“Well.”

“I’ll have to give this a second listen, but I didn’t like it.”

“It seems like you never like new albums, like you don’t want to listen to them.”

“Yeah [laughs] you know me. I mean it wasn’t bad; I’d give it a 6.5 and need another listen.”

“It seemed more glossy, more…mainstream isn’t the right word.”

Let’s say it’s more consciously commercial. I give it 3 Devil Horns.
